Why is your skin slippery or slimy feeling with soft water
Question
We recently built a new home and have a well and septic system. The problem we have is this. When we take a shower, wash our hands, or clothes we have problems getting the soap to rinse off.It feels as if we have a film all over our body when we finish our showers and wash our hands. What can be done about this? The good thing about it is that we do not have to use as much soap in the clothes washer and dishwasher.
Answer
It sounds like you have soft water but you might want to measure the bacteria levels to be sure you don't actually have slime.
Hard water contains a lot of calcium and/or magnesium in it. As you bath in standard hard water, the calcium and magnesium strip the natrual oils off of your skin and hair. You feel cleaner because your skin is dryer making it feel squeaky clean. That "squeak" you feel is from lack of oil, just like in machinery. I would imagine a car engine is much cleaner without oil in it, but it wont last long.
When you run water through a water softener, the calcium and magnesium are removed. Now when you bathe, the natural oil is left behind and your skin and hair is softer, more protected from the elements.
