If you bought one of these devices based on unfounded medical claims, we would suggest asking for an immediate refund.

According to many published articles, changing the pH of drinking water offers no medical benefit that drinking tap water doesn't. The best example of this is Kansas City Missouri where the drinking water pH is over 10. Citizens of Kansas City are no healthier. Most USA municipal water has an alkaline pH to protect the concrete drain pipes.

Basically we think you are throwing your money away. If the theory is that raising your stomach pH is healthier, you should get the same result by eating antacid and save a fortune.

  • Myth: Kangen water is different from alkaline, ionized water.

Fact: The word "Kangen" in Japanese means "return to origin" and is simply a marketing term. The Alkaline water ionizers contains a filter and ionizing chamber. All these system are basically the same.

Kangen Water is a device manufactured by Enagic.

If you were tricked into buying one of theese devices
file a complaint with the BBB and ask for a refund

'one or more complaints are unresolved meaning the company failed to properly address the complaint allegations or their response was inadequate.'

"A business may receive an "NR" (No Rating) instead of a rating under circumstances that include:

BBB file is being reviewed or updated
Recent activity requires further review by BBB"

If a salesperson makes a medical claim about alkaline, Kangen or Ionized water, get it in writing. Only regulated drugs can make medical claims.

If you find any website or salesperson making a medical claim about Alkaline, Ionized or Kangen Water you should file a complaint with FDA or the FTC for enforcement.

Also you should write Enagic directly at

    ..
    Compliance Dept
    Enagic USA, Inc.
    4115 Spencer Street
    Torrance, CA 90503
    compliance@enagic.com

Ask them if they support the claims being made by the salesperson or website. If they do not answer you, take that as a no and report the site to the FTC or FDA. If they say yes (they won't), Ask them for the proof. Never trust what the salesperson or website tells you. Ask the manufacturer directly. If you already bought a unit, tell them the claims the salesperson made, ask them if they support the claim and if not, ask for a full refund.

If they refuse you can always file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau as many have.

After receiving an e-mail from them at Enagic stating we wrote this aritcle because we though their prices are too high, (a ridiculous assumption) On January 11, 2011, we wrote back and asked the following questions :

    1. Can you please tell me what the medical benefits are as a result of drinking Enagic's alkaline water?

    2. Can you tell me if drinking Enagic's alkaline water changes body or blood pH?

    3. Can you also address the claims made on this webpage? Are the claims made truthful or are they a scam?

    4. On your website you state "Tap water is a healthier option than soft drinks. But according to the Environmental Working Group, there have been 315 pollutants found in America's tap water since 2004, and over half of these pollutants are completely unregulated and can legally exist in any amount. At the current levels of contamination, the public is starting to question the quality of tap water and wonders if it is safe enough to drink. Based on these facts, it's no wonder that the demand for Kangen Water® is constantly increasing."

Does Kangen Water remove these pollutants?

    5. On your site you claim "Bottled water is not necessarily healthier than tap water and yet it costs much more! Although associated with healthy water, bottled water is not guaranteed to be any healthier than tap water. Often the only difference is the added minerals which have no proven health benefits."

    a. Is Kangen Water healthier than Tap Water?
    b. Do the "added minerals" in bottled water raise the pH?
    c. Does Kangen Water have proven health benefits by double blind studies?
    d. Does Enagic disclaim the health benefits made by those selling your devices?

As of this date, we have received no reply.

We feel she does not answer because she knows the claims are false. As we said several times in this article, get all claims in writing. They refuse to put claims in writing because the claims are simply not true.

    Health Quackery Scams

The Internet may be the “information superhighway” to some, but to others it is an easy way to market junk science. One of the primary 4 market areas on the Internet is alternative
medicine, including all sorts of special water that is supposed to have medical healing and general health benefits. There are literally thousands of web sites promoting such products. Many of these supposedly special effects of water are based on the theory that subtle changes made to water’s internal structure have health benefits and that this structural memory is retained through extremely low dilutions of this formulated water. This is called homeopathy and is pure nonsense but people succumb to these crazy schemes. You can read all about homeopathy from thousands of sites on the Internet, including web sites set up to expose such scams designed primarily to separate people from their money.

A good web site for facts about homeopathy is provided by the National Council Against Health Fraud (NCAHF).

Another good homeopathy web site (http://www.homeowatch.org/) has been organized by Stephen Barrett, a medical doctor.

Beware of claims that you can change your blood pH

Tammy Roberts, MS, RD, LD, Nutrition and Health Education Specialist in Barton County, University of Missouri Extension

    Original article

Sarah Janicek, B. S., Extension Associate, Nutritional Sciences, University of Missouri Extension

You may have seen advertisements about eating certain foods to change the pH of your blood so that you can prevent cancer, become more youthful, have more energy, or prevent a variety of other diseases. The pH of any solution can range in number from 0-14. Seven is considered a neutral solution. Above 7 is more alkaline and below 7 is more acidic. The fact is our blood pH remains fairly constant and we cannot change it by what we eat.

The type of diet some of these advertisements refer to is the Alkaline Ash diet. This diet promotes consumption of fruit, vegetables and milk with only minor amounts of meat, fish, eggs, and grains. The thought is that if you eat these foods, your body will benefit by becoming more alkaline. These foods do leave by-products that make the urine more alkaline. But urine is not blood. Urine is contained in the bladder and then excreted.

Supporters of this diet believe that it can prevent cancer because some studies have shown that in a test tube, cancer cells grow faster in an acidic environment. In similar tests, chemotherapy drugs have worked more effectively if the area around the tumor was more alkaline. These are only test tube studies and have not been tested in the human body. According to Dr. Gabe Mirkin in an article on www.quackwatch.org, studies show that cancer cells cannot survive in an alkaline environment but neither can any of the other cells in your body.

The normal pH of the body is 7.35 to 7.45. If something happens to change this, the body immediately works to get the pH back to this range. There are certain situations when the pH of the body changes slightly. For example, when lactic acid is produced (during or after a hard workout) or when the kidneys are not functioning properly. In the case of the workout, the body adjusts in different ways to get the pH back to normal. In the case of kidneys not working properly, dialysis is needed to help maintain the pH of the blood. Dr Mirkin states that anything that changes the pH of your body can make you very sick and death could result.

Another thing to note is that the pH of the blood will not be the same as the pH of the urine or saliva. Don’t believe that you can test either the urine or saliva and know the pH of your blood. The only way to test the pH of the blood is to actually test the blood.

The American Cancer Society does recommend a diet of mostly plant foods with limited saturated fat and added sugars. The reason plant-based foods help reduce the risk of cancer is because of the nutrients the plant contains, not because they can change the pH of your blood.

Kangen Water is a trademark of Enagic and is being used as an example of elevated pH water. Claims of scams or deception are opinions founded in the actions and words of their distributors, resellers and those promoting any health claims regarding the water produced from these machines and not necessarily about the manufacturer of the equipment.

This article is designed to answer the many calls we receive with people typing to sell us alkaline water systems including the Kangen Water Systems. We have heard so many outlandish medical claims being made that we feel compelled to offer our educated opinion on this matter. Our opinion comes from 30 years of direct experience in medical, research and scientific based water production. As with anything, you should discuss any medical device claims with your physician or research it with the FDA or CDC.
