Heat Capacity
|
Due to its heat capacity water is an excellent moderator of daily temperatures and climate. Water has the ability to hold a large amount of heat without going through any appreciable change in temperature. It is due to factors such as this that for instance a tea kettle seemingly takes a long time to boil. This is also why there is less variation in temperature in coastal regions than there is inland.
Waters heat capacity is the standard measure to which the heat capacity of other substances are measured. The unit of measure is a calorie. A calorie is the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water one degree centigrade. It is actually from 14.5oC to 15.5oC. Another way to measure is the British thermal unit. The British thermal unit is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of a pound of water one degree Fahrenheit. It is from 63oF to 64o. No matter which type of unit measurement is used the required amount of heat is commonly referred to as specific heat. Water has a value of 1 iron has a value of 0.1 and the value for dry sand is 0.2.
